BLACK ELDERS MENTAL HEALTH DAY CENTRE
The Centre is in D'Eynsford Road near to the centre of Camberwell. The centre is open to Service Users on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to provide support to Afro-Caribbeans over 60 living in the community. The centre helps to alleviate social and emotional isolation and anxiety. The majority of users are referred by Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPN) from Maudsley Hospital.
The centre provides Afro-Caribbean meals to meet the cultural and religious needs of users. One of the main activities at the Centre is the Prayer Meeting which is run by a Pastor on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays and Thursday many other other activities are held.
The group enjoy activities such as planting and harvesting vegetables and fruit. The group are keen to keen to expand their gardening repertoire and hope to produce an even wider range of fruit and vegetables in 2005.
The group have been on holiday to Folkestone and have enjoyed day trips to France. Due to a high demand by service users for outings, weekly trips were arranged to various seaside areas, safari parks, historical places, botanical gardens and shopping destinations.
At the centre Holistic therapies have been introduced and a fully qualified reflexologist and aromatherapist visit weekly. Arts and crafts programmes have also proved very popular and the centre will be offering classes in batik, fabric painting, quilt-making, cushion making, stencilling, glass painting, basketing, weaving and knitting.
The centre has run events such as the Silver Surfer's Festival. Many of the service users are keen to learn how to use a computer and in particular how to send emails. The centre currently has a volunteer that comes in once a week to teach them.
The Black Elders Project is funded under a Social Services Agreement and can accommodate up to 15 Users per day.
