STONES END DAY CENTRE

The Stones End Day Centre is situated in the North of the Borough near to Elephant and Castle.

The centre provides day care support to older people (60+) with physical and mental disabilities, visual and hearing impairment. The service users have different dependency levels and attending the centre enables them to live in their own homes or in sheltered accommodation.

Stones End Centre is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm , with service users attending from about 9.30am until 4.00pm. Mondays to Fridays. The centre has 2 minibuses with drivers and volunteers to take users to and from their homes to the centre.

Most of the service users are referred by Social Workers through Community Care Assessments of needs. Others are referred by Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPN), GPS, families and wardens.

The centre provides hot meals, tea and toast, and sandwiches are provided to users to take home should they be hungry before retiring to bed.

The service users are encouraged to take part in many activities at the centre, and also go on day trips and holidays. Last year the service users had two holidays, in May they had a week in Eastbourne and in November they visited Cliftonville in Kent.

The centre has a range of activities each day, these include OTAGO exercise classes, traditional card games, bingo, sing-a-longs and new programmes such as table yoga, and aromatherapy classes. The centre also has a regular visit from the British School of Osteopathy.

In May, the centre held a very special VE Day celebration, with service users making and dressing up in hats and war-time costumes. They were also entertained by singer Anita Elias who sang war-time songs and helped the group reminisce.

The centre can accommodate up to 43 users a day. The average attendance is 38 users per day. Some service users attend the Centre up to 3 days per week and others attend 1 or 2 days depending on the other services they receive i.e. home care, shopping and family support.
